Whitby Gin
The Product Brief
We were approached by the co-founders of Whitby distillery who had a specific vision for their brand. Designed and manufactured in Yorkshire, this bottle is as quirky as the coastal town that inspires it.
We succeeded, where others failed, in delivering the world’s first ammonite design at the bottle’s base, carefully sculptured to mirror the famous fossils found on the shores of Whitby.
A clever decoration technique, textured glass, wraps around the entire surface of the bottle breathing life into the Whitby Gin brand.

Our methods used in production
Bottle Design 1

Step 1
We first created a mood board to inspire the visual direction. This included features well-associated with Whitby such as its maritime roots, Captain Cook, the Goth scene and the famous Abbey. We agreed that the ammonite fossil was an element of Whitby that hadn’t been over-exploited by mar-keting strategies and saw an opportunity to design a truly unique product.

Step 2
In order for the base of the bottle to replicate a fossilised ammonite, we realised visuals would not be enough. We worked hard to ensure the texture felt convincing, a fantastic opportunity to explore the capability of delivering such quality in a product, whilst still guaranteeing that it was a feature that could be repeated correctly and go on to be efficiently manufactured.

Step 3
The body of the bottle is carefully designed to symbolise the North Sea. An ocean texture wraps 360 degrees around the body and follows the profile of the shoulder. The textured glass purposely crashes up the bottom of the neck, just as the waves hit the Northern coastline on storm filled nights.

As choppy waters merge into a smoother shoreline, the texture towards the middle of the bottle subtly blends into a flat surface to accommodate for the labelling requirements. To ensure larger scale manufacturing capabilities, both the ammonite feature and ocean texture were developed in such a way to allow the product to be repeated and edited should further modifications be required.
