STEP 1
There was a strong desire for the final product to stand out from comparable goods. The design indicated that this would be achieved by the bottle’s broad shoulders, a unique visual in the rum market. Though the original concept contained elements which traditional moulding could not achieve, we overcame the challenge with clever modifications. By adapting the original profiles to add more flow to the external shape coupled with the resulting internal glass distribution, very similar visual cues were successfully achieved.

To accommodate the leather label, which travels around the glass surface in a single piece, it was necessary for the bottle to stand on two feet. The weight of the product, owing to the large proportion of glass at the base, created a challenge in this step. Using our knowledge and expertise, we maintained a smooth surface around the entire label area while simultaneously preventing the semi-molten glass from sinking and losing its shape. This was achieved using a special high-heat conductive material which allowed the label to be applied while also retaining the ‘bridge’ effect which can be seen from the front and back of the bottle.

The final challenge was to achieve the solid glass profiles which are visible both in the sidewalls and at the base. The visibility of glass thickness in the finished product is dependent on the external profiles and mould design dictates how the glass is distributed around the surface of the bottle. These two aspects combined, determine the visibility of the internal glass distribution which was a key requirement of the overall concept. This required extremely careful consideration of the external profiles and edges as well as a calculated and precise design of the blank mould.
